1. The Great Bed of Ware

Made just prior to the turn of the century in 1590-1600, this Vredeman de Vries bed is among the most famous ancient beds in the world. This carved oak piece was originally painted and features stunning panels of marquetry. Currently housed in the British Galleries, this bed is best known for being quite enormous during its time, as it measures over 128 inches across. Shakespeare was so inspired by the bed that he makes a small mention of it in his infamous play ‘Twelfth Night.’

2. The Private Cloud

The Private Cloud is a German-designed and built bed that’s both simplistic and stylized. Notable for its use of curves and light wood finish, this bed was created to function like a rocking chair, as inhabitants can sway gently back and forth while they sleep.

3. BedUP

Designed by Decadrages and built to look as inconspicuous as possible, the BedUP is a space-saving bed that generations of cramped apartment-dwellers certainly wish they had around for personal use. Able to save up to 13 square feet of space in floor plan, the BedUP retracts into the ceiling when not in use.

4. Feel Seating System

Technically, this bed model is actually a regular seat, though it was designed with the idea of multiple uses in mind. The Feel Seating System can be contorted by the user and reworked into a variety of shapes, so one can sleep, lounge, or dangle any which way she likes. The model contains 120 spheres made of sofa-like material and covered with elastic fabric, and the bright colors in use help to make this a stunningly modern piece. Now they just need to make these into bunk beds so that all kinds of crazy rearrangements can be performed!

5. William Morris’ Bed

This early 17th century bed is remarkable more for its artistic influence than its actual design, though its remarkable craftsmanship has been well-preserved over the centuries. William Morris wrote a poem inspired by this bed, and his family was involved in its design, building, and accessorizing as well. In fact, Morris’ youngest daughter, May, designed the curtains and bed cover for her father’s artistically-inspiring piece of furniture.

6. Queen Victoria’s Bed

Queen Victoria, ill near the end of her life, had to be transferred from her typical bed to a smaller, single-size version for easier bedside care. Draped in a beautiful bed cover that was presented to the Queen as a gift from China for the marking of her Jubilee in 1897, this bed is also adorned with the Queen’s two favorite pieces that she always kept near her bed: a pocket watch that belong to Prince Albert, as well as a photograph of the Prince after his passing. Hubert von Herkomer would later paint the Queen’s deathbed portrait while her body rested on this bed in 1901, and the royal family would keep this bedroom and piece as a personal shrine for the next half-century.

7. The Melville Bed

Adorned with long, luxurious red drapes that hang nearly to the floor, the Melville Bed is better known for its ornamental display than the bed frame itself. Made in 1700 and commissioned by George Melville himself, this stunning piece of centuries-old furniture was initially designed for use in the Earl of Melville’s new home in Fife.

8. Louis XIV’s Bed

Louis XIV of France took many personal visits from important statesmen of the day back during the 1700s, and there was no better place than his personal bed chamber. The bedchamber was actually designed from 1701 to serve as the exact center of the palace, and even one of the United States’ founding fathers, Benjamin Franklin, visited the King in his bedchamber in 1778. This bed from Versaille has many red and gold elements, and is typically covered by thick drapes that only leave three small openings into the bed visible at any one time.

9. The Space Economizing Bed

This bed is the absolutely perfect bed for anyone who sleeps in this same specific position night after night. There’s not much else to say about this bed other than “don’t move an inch while you sleep!” Granted, if this was a top bunk on a set of wood bunk beds, the person at the bottom probably wouldn’t be very happy, but this piece gets style points for its unique (and humorous) take on modern bed design.

10. Float by Okooko

You may not be able to sail the seven seas in this bed, but you’ll want to after you take your first glance. Designed by David Trubridge for Okooko, the Float resembles an ancient sailing ship, and looks as though it could easily float on both clouds and water, though neither is actually possible. Trubridge incorporated elements from both historical boat designs as well as modern bed designs when crafting this piece, and this concept bed was voted the finest piece of bedroom furniture at the Furniture Fashion competition in New Zealand during its time on display.

11. The Lomme

The Lomme is probably an image that can define modern bed design in one glance. Shaped like an egg and featuring a smooth, white edifice reminiscent of Apple computer designs, the Lomme may look simple but its elegant nature masks its many features. Among them: a light therapy clock with alarm settings, a mattress massaging device, and a bed control unit that is actually an altered iPhone.

12. The Nappak

Need to take a quick nap but don’t have your bed around or a sleeping bag at the ready? The Nappak is the future of bed design for quick naps and portable carriage, as this piece is easily inflated and quickly stored. Plus, with an inflatable canopy-like cover, this is no ordinary air mattress picked up from your local department store, but something much greater.

13. The Rampbed

This bed may be designed for children, but let’s face it: any adult skater nerd would drool at the chance to sleep in this remarkably well-crafted piece. Beds designed specifically for kids are often overlooked for more adult fare, but this piece is certainly worth of inclusion on our list. Why? The bed doubles as a skate ramp and a sleeping area, but beyond that, look at the quality of the woodwork and other incredibly fun features, such as the skateboard wheels being used as drawer handles for the built-in storage units.

14. The Napshell

The item in the image above looks like it could be almost anything when not shown to scale, and this bed certainly looks closer to the handle for some futuristic iron than a place to sleep when first glanced. The Napshell, however, definitely won’t fit on an ironing board, though there really only is room for one on this bed. Designed for proper back posture and avoiding straight lines of any kind, this bed is the perfect addition to the bedroom of anyone who has recurring night terrors about right angles.

15. The Sonic Bed

Music nerds and rock stars finally have a bed that was specially designed for them. The Sonic Bed is unique in that it requires plenty of power to operate, 220 volts to be exact. This power won’t go to waste, however. All those volts will be feeding the speakers built into the indented bed frame, where sleepers will be deafened for sleep with pervasive noise production. It may sound startling and unsettling, but is done primarily to drown out noises outside the bed.

Guest Post

It’s the bedroom that’s one of the most important sections of a home. Bedrooms are a place to relax and regain that lost energy, leave the stress of anything. Of late, there are five mainstays of a bedroom to be kept in mind as far as its decoration is concerned.

Let’s quickly navigate through those crucial points so that you can kickoff the decoration for the bedroom in a flash.

1. Bedding

If you are planning to buy the bedroom furniture on a tight budget then you must start off with a simple bed spread and bed skirt. Remember that keeping a simple bed spread would let you spread out a foundation for different additions later on. These spreads don’t have to be boring as one can always play with different weaves and texture that’s set to enhance and liven up your palette. Work accordingly to see what you want depending on your personality and season’s demand.

2. Pillows

No need to compromise on the pillows and accessories. If you don’t choose a good pillow chances are that you would develop neck and back problems. Thus, select a good designed pillow but also ensure that that it is in sync with the health norms. One can also add shine, glitter and paint the cover of the pillow to give it a personal touch. You can also find some luxurious yet comfortable fabrics to make some appealing pillows.

3. Bench

If you are financially incapable to bring in a good bench next to the bed, you can also look out for the garden bench and happily make-up. One can also paint the same with coffee color and add cushion to make it look elegant yet inexpensive. The usage of dining chair can find its way in to the bed room if you are not in a mood to go for an expensive set of chairs.

4. Wall Art & Others

You can paint the wall with the color of your choice but make sure it matches with the curtains and other accessories, too. Use some good wallpapers and it would add up to the shine and look. Also put some scenery of varied moods to add vigor to the living room furniture. A couch can also be kept for easy sitting and relaxing.

5. Lightings

Last but not the least, it’s the lighting of the bed room that really matters in setting up the mood for a relaxing time. Don’t use brighter lights like tubes and bulbs. Rather use some light shaded bulbs to provide a soothing effect on you as soon as you enter the bedroom. Look over the internet for some lighting accessories specially crafted for bedroom

Home decor is an important thing and bedroom demands special attention in the field of home’s interior decoration. Look for some great home furnishing ideas and tips for a great home decor.

Erica Grey has given many tips and advices on home decor aspects on various web pages. She offers designs for every furniture in your home be it bedroom, kitchen, bathroom or living room furniture.

If you live in a country where there are many residents but with very little space, having a spare room is a luxury. However, if you are fortunate to own a spare room, you often don’t realize the amazing gift that you have. Many people end up using the spare room as a junk or lumber room, and it is a real waste.

Let’s look at some ideas to make the most of your spare room.

First of all, you should ask yourself what you want to use your spare room for. One of the main problems with spare rooms is that they often serve a dual function – as a storage room on the one hand and a guest bedroom on the other. What usually ends up happening is that the guest feels as if he is in a lumber room and is not comfortable, and there is not enough room for the items you are storing in there because you need space for the spare bed.

Once you have decided that your spare room is your store room, forget about using it as a bedroom. Instead, arrange all the items you wish to store in there very neatly, doing the best you can to maximize the space at your disposal. Are there cupboards in there that you could make good use of? If not, then at least stack the items you are storing there neatly and in an accessible manner so that you can reach them easily whenever you need to.

If your spare room is going to be a bedroom, you may not put your best furniture in there, but you should still try to make it as comfortable as possible for your guest. This means making the best of what there is. For example, make sure that the bedding is always fresh and clean and that the room has been aired out for at least the morning before your guest arrives. Take a look at the curtains. Do they look clean, or are they dusty? Sweep well under the beds. Though most guests don’t check under the beds, it can still be very off-putting when you are staying in someone else’s home to find papers, dirty laundry, and orange peels swept under the bed that you are sleeping in.

Another thing to remember is that even though you may assume that your guests are not nosy, never leave anything lying around that you don’t want them to see, such as your private papers or bills.

Add some little extras to make the room feel more homely, such as a nice area rug. Maybe you could put in a pretty oval rug or a floral rug just to add a bit of color. A vase of flowers never comes amiss to make the room look alive and beautiful. And one of the nicest things you could do is prepare a small package, similar to what they have in some hotels, with a small bar of soap, a pretty handkerchief and a piece of chocolate, with a handwritten note welcoming your guest.

Your spare room may not look like the Ritz, but once you have given it the status of a guest room, you can certainly make your guests feel at home.

Youngsters can be old enough to know something of what they want, but are not sure how to bring it about. That’s the challenge for Mom and Dad.

A good place to start is by looking through the child’s favorite books or toys. If the child is old enough, he or she can be involved by suggesting favorite colors, interests such as sports, animals or the environment, or favorite story characters.

Wall Coverings and Floor Coverings

Once the theme or color scheme is chosen, it’s time to starting shopping for fabric, wall coverings and floor coverings that will bring the decor inspiration to life. Choosing a primary print or pattern will give the room’s decor a good starting point, so take time selecting this key element. Despite your excitement, and that of your youngster, don’t buy fabric, wall coverings or even neat-looking kids area rugs on a first visit. This room decor will have to last for at least a few years, given the family budget, so it’s well worth taking time to make sure the theme won’t go stale in a short time.

After selecting a main print, choose a secondary color from it to serve as the background for paint, wallpaper, kids area rugs and ceiling. Choose coordinating fabrics and accessories based on the colors in the main print.

A good decorating technique is to give the room a focal point. Many people make the child’s bed the focal point, but a more interesting choice might be a boys area rugs with trains and a railroad pattern, or a girls area rugs of flowers and butterflies. A mural painted on the wall, or a play area decorated in the theme, also could work well to reinforce the design.

Decorating Elements

Selecting decorating elements for a child’s room is always tricky because of safety issues. However, with some imagination and some careful scouring of garage sales and flea markets, it’s possible to find elements that will carry out the theme without endangering the child. For instance, if a little girl loves flowers and the outdoors, a series of faucet handles glued onto pegboard and painted in bright colors would make charming clothes hooks. A little boy who adores wild animals probably would enjoy having his own personal jungle printed on a boys’ area rug.

Bed linens, window treatments and area rugs that enhance the color scheme or the theme also are integral to the decor. While there are plenty of linen sets for popular cartoon and movie characters, these can be rather pricey. Plus, too much of a good thing makes even the most meticulously planned look cluttered and frantic. Instead of overdoing the characters, choose these furnishings in colors that complement the room’s theme, and then add the pattern with some throw pillows or pillowcases.

Identity and Ownership of the Room

It’s important to a child’s sense of identity and ownership of the room that he or she is allowed to take part in the decorating as well. Create a place on a wall or on some shelves where the child can display artwork, school projects or collectibles. Thinking of safety, a marker board with magnets would be an ideal option. Also be sure to give the child a table or desk for homework or a computer.

Finally, repeat the main pattern, color and fabric at least three times around the room to tie the theme together. The result will be a bedroom the child will love, as well as a successful home decorating project.

Other than that you can get a nice and stylish solution to store your books and small decorating pieces. The shelf is made by the folding an aluminum leaf of 3mm thickness that is later laser cut and transformed by smooth twists and turns.

The modular bookshelves design is the work of Denis Santachiara for Domodinamica. By the way, among other new products by the company are many very creative furniture objects including kids drawing table.

“Hi, we’d like you to decorate our house! You know, chose the colors for the painting, probably some wallpaper, tiling, whatever you feel it could look nice. Also, if you can create that feeling of “home” it would be great. Uhm, and one other thing … we want our bedroom to have a unique contemporary touch. Think you can help us?”

so I said: “Yeah, I can help you, but my services are a bit pricey… why don’t I give you some tips so you can manage the work by yourselves?”

This was a dialogue with a friend of mine that just got his brand new house on a beautiful hill. He received the floor plans from the architect, but the thing is that he didn’t paid for the interior design services of the architect, so he found himself in the situation where he had to find somebody to decorate his house. He came to me, since I’m also an architect, and if I had more time, I would have definitely take the project, but that’s not the case. Anyway, what I gave him was far more valuable than the decorating project he would have had to pay good money for. I gave him a couple of principles, guiding tips to decorate his house in a manner that would invite you in, and make you feel like home. Since the main concern was the bedroom, I will explain a couple of things my friend, and you as well if you search to decorate your bedroom have to keep in mind:

1. Stick to two colors

This is the tendency nowadays, and in my opinion is a good one, because simplicity is attractive, and relaxing. The trend these days is black and white.

2. Keep a simple line of the furniture.

Dark colors for the nightstands and the closet and the bed frame. For a contrast with the walls

3. Parquet is always nice when you chose your floor

Of course, there are other solutions for the floor, but with today’s market you can find literally almost any kind of color or shape of parquet.

4. Wooden VS Metallic or plastic furniture

Well, the option is up to you, but my suggestion is to have the same material for all of your furniture objects that you will have in your bedroom.

5. Use diffuse lighting objects

Diffuse is definitely better than direct, it’s more comforting, and relaxing.

6. What Wall Finishes

These can range from simple plain colored paints to heavy decoration wall papers or even a combination of these two. Having such a wall in a bedroom can really define the dimensions of a bedroom.

7. About Decorating Accessories

The accessories you will add to your bedroom environment will add life to a master bedroom. A good idea would be a flower bearing plant that changes it’s form all the time thus creating a new charm in the bedroom every time it changes its form or flowers. Pictures and frames with simple clear forms can also bring your bedroom to life.

Hope these tips will help you create that bedroom you dream about, and if you need more tips, ideas or suggestions visit our bedroom furniture section here on archtopia.

The Dekka Daybed is not what you may envision when you think about a typical daybed, rather a modern interpretation that features minimal construction and the combining of Danish Modern design and the Arabic Culture. Originally designed by FurnID for a design competition the Dekka Daybed is now produced by Fredericia Furniture in which a solid aluminum frame is meticulously hewn from single piece in a 40 hour process and then upholstered by hand, the perfect combination of new and old world craftsmanship. See more of the creative modern furniture from FurnID. Height: 30 cm Width: 90 cm Length: 200 cm
