Hugon Kowalski from H3AR proposal Watertower idea for the eVolo addresses the growing need for water in Darfur, not only as a means to sustain life, but also to end the raging wars in the region. Many feel the problems of Darfur will end once a viable water source is found. Some are hopeful that water may be found in the region, however, a vast underground lake that scientists hoped could end violence, was just ruled to have probably dried up thousands of years ago because the area received too little rain and had the wrong rock types for water storage. Kowalski’s scheme takes the water crisis into account and has developed a tower to aid in the finding of underground water.

Kokkugia | Taipei Performing Arts Center

The latest proposal regardint the Taipei’s Performing Arts Center, comes from Kokkugia, a New York and London based architecture firm. Kokkugia’s form, which is based on the location’s unique geography, is a compelling composition that attempts to create “a dynamic venue and a public space of spectacle.” The slight slope of the site in emphasized in the form, as visitors enter from under the building. The interior aims to create the best possible acoustics. The roof is a network of semi-autonomous agents that reorganize to adjust so that the roof maintains some of its original geometry and other parts shift freely.

Aurora Pavillion for Shanghai World Expo 2010

Chinese jade culture through its 8,000-year history will take center stage at the Taiwan-based Aurora Group’s Expo 2010 Pavilion. Jade symbolizes the national character such as gentleness, perseverance and the pursuit of peace, and the Expo will provide a platform to help promote such hopes, Tan Baijuan, deputy director of the pavilion, said yesterday while unveiling the design.

The pavilion will feature rare exhibits such as a piece of 2.5-ton jade and Beijing Olympic medals made of fine jade from the Kunlun Mountains in Northwest China’s Qinghai Province.
The theatre inside the pavilion will show Chinese myths and about 30 rare jade relics from the Aurora Museum will also be exhibited. The biggest challenge now is to squeeze the soul of jade’s history spanning thousands of years into a short journey of 20 minutes, said Tan. More images after the break.
