This building is one of the latest build projects signed by Frank Gehry, and is located in Las Vegas. The center is funded and supported by Keep Memory Alive, and it’s supposed to become a national resource for the most current research and scientific information for the treatment of Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, Huntington ’s Diseases, and ALS (Lou Gehrig’s Disease) as well as focusing on prevention, early detection and education. The complete name of the project is Cleveland Clinic Lou Ruvo Center for Brain Health, and from the images you can see that is nothing ordinary about it, as we were accustomed to Gehry’s projects.

The center hosts these 3 main spaces:

1. Medical building for patient care and research. Featuring simple, functional interiors and a lego like exterior of slightly disorderly blocks.

She started out by creating a list of the things she loves. What she produced seemed at first daunting and random: “natural light, fireplaces, barbecues, spending time with family/friends, a blanketing snowfall and the resulting silence…”. Through discussing the particulars of each item individually, the architect and his wife discovered how the change of the seasons played an important role in the way they live their lives. The active couple gleaned inspiration for their home from their experience of a nearby lake. The same body of water they would kayak on in the summer is re-invigorated each year anew when it freezes over in the winter for ice-skating. Just as the routine of one activity begins to lose its allure, it is replaced by the newness of another. They wanted their home to have the same flexibility and range both in its use of space and in its details that would interact with the environment and evolve over time.

At the first meeting, the clients introduced both their growing family and growing art collection. They were particularly excited about a new artist, Vik Muniz, whose works based on photographs of Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis provided a delightful discovery upon closer inspection: paintings of the iconic images rendered in peanut butter and jelly. This moment of discovery and playful deception became the design concept of the house.

Approaching the house by the winding driveway, the gabled form, massive chimney, and shingled siding are all reminiscent of traditional houses on eastern Long Island. Looking closely, the shingles are, in fact, a woven screen of oak surveyors stakes, similar to those that dotted the steeply wooded lot when the clients first saw it. Similarly, the massive chimney that anchors the house to the site isn’t solid at all, but is actually made of thin concrete panels.
