3 Essential Decorating Books You Should Read

February 23, 2011 by Dan

Some people are innate designers – they can so easily visualize in their inner minds what their home should look like, and they’re able to translate this vision into reality without breaking into a sweat. Others leave the job entirely up to the interior designers they hire – they are happy to be told what works best for them and even happier when they love the end result. And then there are those who don’t really know what they want, but know that they can identify it when they see it.

Books and other sources of information on decorating cater to all three kinds of people because they augment ideas, improve on designs, and help you find innovative uses for stuff that you already own. They help bring down cost, time and effort, they facilitate your search for raw materials and finished products, and best of all, they give you a sneak preview of what your home would look like when finished. So if you’re shopping for decorating books and wondering which ones you should pick up, here’s my list of those you absolutely should read:

  • Decorating Without FearDecorating Without Fear: Penned by Sharon Hanby-Robie and published by Rutledge Hill, this coffee table book is a beginner’s delightful entry into the world of decoration and design. It is perfect for someone with absolutely no background or knowledge in design to find ways and means to do up their home with the expert guidance of someone who knows how things should be done. The author promises you a home that you will love by getting you to take trademarked color tests that help determine your personality and the colors and shades that best suit it. And best of all, there are step-by-step instructions to help you with DIY projects and reduce the cost associated with decorating your home and designing its interiors. It’s available for as little as $9.99 online.
  • Creating a Beautiful Home:Creating a Beautiful Home This one is from the personal perspective of designer Alexandra Stoddard, she takes you through her journey of decorating her home, step by step. The tagline of the book – From Starting Fresh to Freshening Up – Inspiring Ideas to Help You Turn Your House into a Warm and Welcoming Home says it all. This book is great both for people with new homes who’re looking for innovative and comfortable design ideas and for those who just want to redecorate their home from time to time.
  • Downsizing your Home with Style: Downsizing your Home with StyleLauri Ward’s book is the perfect book for those who are moving to a smaller space from a much bigger home for various reasons. From telling you what to retain and what to leave behind to helping you creating the most comfortable living spaces in a small area, Ms. Ward offers great advice and provides amazingly helpful tips. With this book, you can not only create a beautiful and comfortable home in a smaller space than you’re normally used to by discovering storage spaces you didn’t know existed and by creating the illusion of larger spaces where there is none, and by combining multiple purposes into a single room. If you’ve looked at design books and magazines skeptically wondering how many people actually lived in such beautiful and intricately designed homes, then this book is the one that keeps it as real as it gets.
