When one thinks of rustic decor they might think of old, rusted furniture. But it’s actually quite the opposite: beautiful wood pieces paired with natural materials, leather and soothing, light colors. If you want to transform your home into a rustic paradise, follow these simple, fun tips:
Baskets, Baskets Galore!
Accessorizing tables, bookcases and floating shelving units with wicker baskets is a great way to incorporate wood and rustic into your home. They also make for great storage: just place all your extra odds and ends or guests towels in them and it will give it extra, rustic flair.
Natural Fabrics
Linen, burlap, canvas. Need I say more? All of these materials are easy to come by, fairly inexpensive and are a rustic staple. Use white linen fabrics for your couch and decorative burlap throw pillows. You can incorporate these materials in a variety of ways around your home and will bring all the wood pieces to light. If you love animal prints and leather, you can easily work them into the room as well. Try an animal print rug or grommet drapes and tie the room together with a rich, leather chair or couch.
Choose Grain When Incorporating Wood Logs
Too often, we seclude wood logs in the backyard, which get riddled with termites and spider webs. Find a creative way to incorporate them indoors, so they resist natural influences. Try stacking them near your fireplace or layer them in different sizes along a unique feature in your home, which draws your eye there. If you have a wall niche meant for a flatscreen TV, try filling it with wood instead! Usable art, my dear.
Raw Woods — Choose Wisely
Don’t just chose any old wood furniture. Chose one that has limited varnishes and paints, the more natural the better. Find a knotty pine or a wood that shows obvious signs of years. Basically, the more rustic the furniture, the better the room will look. Bring out the natural deepness of the wood by staining it or using a conditioning wax, the transformation will be amazing. If you want to spice up a bedroom or closet, try using re-purposed sliding barn doors.
Simple Rugs
If you have wood floors, try using a shag rug, which has longer carpet fibers, offering a comfy and cozy retreat from the hardwood flooring. Don’t chose a rug with bold, vibrant patterns or a color that too closely resembles the wood: bottom line, stay away from black, brown and deep chocolate colored rugs. Nice and light will do the trick.
Learn to Balance Whites & Neutrals to Nurture the Wood
Accentuate the wood furniture with crisp, clean white walls. Or, if you prefer, paint the walls a cream or light tan color. By using white walls and lighter accent pieces, it will allow the wood pieces to be the star of the room.
