Add a Touch of Summer to Your Home Decor

April 30, 2011 by Dan

Summer can be the perfect time to add a more natural look to your home decorating scheme. Beautiful colors from nature can add the perfect look to any room. Or, decorate your rooms with natural materials gathered from outdoors, or bouquets of fresh flowers cut from your own garden. You can also add natural beauty to your home by choosing art pieces and other decor that reflect nature and the summer season. If you’re ready to get your home ready for summertime enjoyment, here are a few decorating tips to help get you started.

Add Natural-Themed Wall Art

If your walls are looking a little boring or bare, summer is the perfect time to spruce them up a bit. Look for pieces that reflect nature when selecting wall art to accentuate your summer decorating theme. For example, a couple of metal dragonfly wall sculptures could add a nice touch of life to your family room wall. Perhaps a sculpture depicting a flock of birds, or a floral-themed piece would work well. The choices you make should blend nicely with the rest of the room’s decor. If your room already has a theme, choose art pieces that accentuate that theme. By doing so, you’ll create a nice coordinated look.

However, if your room doesn’t already have a theme, you could create one using wall art. For example, by adding a sunshine metal wall art piece and several flower sculptures, your family room could instantly take on a garden theme. You could then build upon your new room theme with other decorating accents and fabric selections.

Spice Things Up With Summer Fabrics

If your room’s decor currently features a lot of heavy or dark fabrics, now is the time to lighten things up a bit. Sew or purchase light or brightly colored covers for your throw pillows, and replace that dark area rug with one a bit lighter. Summer is also the perfect time to lighten up your window treatments. If you have been using heavy insulated drapes to help conserve heat, replace them with airy, light window treatments for the summer season. When you allow more light to enter a room, it just naturally seems more cheerful. If the room is especially sunny, you might also want to install roller window blinds under the curtains, so that you can pull them closed if the sunlight becomes a bit too intense for comfort.

Summertime Colors

The colors of summer are brighter and lighter than those commonly used in winter decorating schemes. Light yellow, sunny rose, and luscious apricot shades can really warm up your rooms. White, off-white and light neutral shades such as taupe and sand can also work well. Beach themed rooms featuring beige, white and blue color schemes can also work well. Replacing some of your darker accessories with lighter colored counterparts for summer can really help add a seasonal look. By simply revising a few of your decorating colors, you can essentially add a whole new look to your home.
