Adding Style with Wrought Iron

February 18, 2011 by Dan

If you’re looking for a way to add beauty and unmistakable style to your home, wrought iron accessories can work perfectly. This beautifully rustic material has a long history of being used to make decorative home accessories. You’ll find a wide array of choices, including art pieces, functional decor, and even furniture made from wrought iron. If you’d like to add the beauty of wrought iron to your home, here are some decorating tips to inspire you.

European Styling

When choosing home decor items crafted from wrought iron, you’ll often find that the pieces have strong touches of European design. Wrought iron is a very traditional material used in many European regions, so this is quite natural. Wrought iron blends nicely with many decorating styles, including most of the European-influenced styles. However, this shouldn’t keep you from incorporating wrought iron accessories into other decorating styles. For example, the use of rustically designed wrought iron pieces is also one of the earmarks of the Southwestern style of decorating.

Wrought Iron Furniture

Although you might automatically think of patio furniture when you think of wrought iron, it can actually be used in a variety of different furniture styles. For example, when decorating a Tuscan styled room, choosing wood furniture pieces accentuated with wrought iron detailing can really add an attractive and authentic touch. Wrought iron coffee tables, baker’s racks and other decorative furniture accessory pieces are also great choices. Try combining the simplicity of wrought iron with decorative pillows and cushions to add both beauty and comfort.

Metal Art

Wrought iron is also a popular material used to create metal art. You’ll sometimes find it used to create contemporary metal sculptures, but you’ll also find it used in many traditional and rustic designs. Wrought iron art is durable, affordable, stylish and even elegant. It’s one of those materials that can be used in exterior as well as interior art pieces. As such, you’ll find a wide array of wrought iron artwork from which to choose, making it easy to find a piece that will perfectly complement your decorating style. Decorative wall grilles, interesting free-form sculptures, or even functional home accessories that look like art are all great possibilities.

When decorating a room, the use of wall art can really create a lot of visual impact. Wrought iron wall sculptures can be the perfect way to add a decorative touch. By using a large wrought iron wall piece, you can easily create an eye-catching focal point. Of course, you could choose to decorate with artistically designed wrought iron pieces that also serve a functional purpose, such as a clock, candle sconce or shelf. For example, a wrought iron chandelier would certainly serve a purpose when hung over the dining room table. However, in addition to providing light, it could also serve as the room’s focal point, especially if it was designed in a unique fashion. Wine racks, baskets, storage racks, curtain rods, towel holders, plant stands and candle holders are all good examples of functional wrought iron items that can also add a decorative accent to a room.
