Decor – A Lighter Shade of Pale

October 23, 2010 by Dan

All of us have a favorite color, but this often changes as we go through life. How many of us, for instance, loved the color red when we were little children? Yet when we grew up, the idea of wearing an item of clothing reminiscent of the scarlet hat that we loved so much at the age of five became totally repugnant. Furthermore, the colors of our clothing do not necessarily match the shades that we use to decorate our homes.

When it comes to home decorating, choosing the right color often boils down to the mood that we want to achieve in that particular room (just as we often want our clothing to express a particular aspect of our personality). For this reason, many of us will choose paler, softer colors for the rooms where we specifically want to relax. Even though our home is normally our haven in general, the main places for relaxation are the bathroom and the bedroom. However, the kitchen and the living room are usually the nerve centers of the home, which is why these are often decorated in warmer colors.

Let’s take a look at pale, soft colors and see how they achieve their desired effect.

There is nothing like a long relaxing bath at the end of the day to make you feel well rested. And to be able to do this properly, your bathroom needs to be decorated in a relaxing décor. For this reason, many people choose pale blue as this is reminiscent of cool, refreshing water. Often the actual bath, sink, and toilet are either white or pale blue. Paint the walls a soft, pale blue, with similarly colored tiles, and a light blue area rug and shower curtain and other furnishings to match.

Alternatively, all of the above can be a pale pink or peach color. These colors are not totally removed from the water theme either, as they will remind you of seashells. Again, the image is of lightness and relaxation. Here, you would put down pink area rugs and use other accessories, such as peach or pink soap holders and fluffy towels to add to the effect.

People often decorate their bedrooms in a lighter shade of pale as well. Here, the thought is not of water, but of rest, dreaminess. A little girl’s bedroom would be a pale pink, while a boy’s room is traditionally pale blue. For adults, especially couples, the color would be somewhat more neutral, such as magnolia, a very light beige, cream, pale yellow or even white (though white can cause too much glare in certain rooms, depending on its direction and how the sunlight penetrates through the windows).

Bedroom furniture is often white, for this reason, adding to this idea of light. If you find the effect a little too pale, you can add some contrast (such as a mainly white and cream room, but with a contrasting red area rug to put in a splash of color). Again, a lot of the color depends on the accessories, such as the bedding and the curtains, and the colors of the furniture. But with wise choices, you should achieve the calming effect that you are looking for by using a lighter shade of pale.
