“Flight of Fancy” Decorating Techniques

May 22, 2011 by Dan

Nature themed schemes are often among the most beautiful choices when decorating your home. There is an almost endless array decorating options to choose from, because there are so many different facets of nature. However, there just seems to be something fascinating and captivating about the concept of flight. If you’d like to add a “flight of fancy” decorating theme to your home, here are a few ideas to help get you started.

Choosing an Overall Theme

There are various ways that you can add a “flight of fancy” theme to a room. In most cases, you’ll want to focus primarily on nature-related themes, such as adding metal birds wall art or perhaps a grouping of butterflies. However, birds and insects are not the only way to represent flight in your decorating theme. A vintage airplane theme could add a nice touch to a boy’s bedroom. Or, add a mystical touch to a girl’s room by focusing on fairies and other imaginary and mythical creatures. Any of these decorating themes could be the perfect way to incorporate the concept of flight into your room designs.

Nature-Themed Rooms

Nature-themed decorating schemes are currently quite popular. Not only do they add a peaceful and serene aura to a room, but nature themes also have a nice eco-friendly look and feel. Celebrate the beauty of nature and the wonder of flight by adding a few pieces of metal dragonfly wall art to a room. Or, add a single oversized photograph depicting an eagle in flight to add an awe-inspiring, inspirational and attention-grabbing focal point. You can also add smaller decorating touches, such as displaying a small bird table sculpture or decorating your throw pillows with a butterfly print fabric.

You can accentuate the overall look of your nature-themed room by using natural fabrics and decorating materials. For example, a grass cloth wall covering would look especially nice. You could also use interesting wall decals to accentuate the overall look. For example, fluffy white cloud wall decals could work well when applied on a sky blue wall.

Fanciful Decorating Themes

The concept of flight can be used as the overall theme behind a truly fanciful decorating scheme. Although this style of decorating works especially well for young girls’ rooms, you could also incorporate it into other rooms, such as a bathroom or indoor patio. Choose art pieces that depict imaginary or mythical creatures. For example, a fairies and butterflies theme could work well for a little girl. Or, add a mysterious touch to a room by incorporating winged gargoyles or artwork depicting other winged mythical creatures such as dragons. There’s almost no limit to how creative you can get with this style of decorating. If you have artistic talent, you could even paint a large mural on one of the walls.

When decorating a room with a fairy and butterfly theme, a light and airy color theme often works best. However, if you are focusing on mythical creatures, a slightly darker color scheme can be used. Smoky purple, gray or metallic shades often work well.
