How To Decorate Your Room Using Contemporary Elements

August 31, 2010 by Dan

If you are decorating a room and want a great contemporary look, you are in luck. With many of the contemporary furnishings and accessories easily available in the market, it is easier than ever before to add contemporary style to a living room or other area of your home. The thing that you need to remember is that no matter whether your interiors are contemporary or classic in style, many of the same decorating principles still apply.

Focal Point

Contemporary Living Room

The first is to think about creating a focal point. Contemporary area rugs can be a great choice because they have modern patterns and color schemes that work well in contemporary rooms.

Think about using solid color rugs as well but do not be afraid to choose contemporary floor coverings that have a strong pattern to them.

Balance

You want to balance the floor covering against the furniture. For example, if your rug is too heavily patterned, you will want to make sure that your furniture is plain or your room may look like it was just jumbled together. This is especially true in a small room when even a medium sized pattern can be overwhelming if it is on too many different objects.

Color

Is also something that you need to consider. Do not be afraid of strong colors. Too many people think that to create a contemporary interior you need neutral colors but these can end up looking bland if you are not careful. Try pulling one or two colors from your area rug and using those throughout the room in order to create a coordinated look that people will love.

Interior Items

Remember that contemporary decor may mean that you want carefully tailored items that have a minimal number of frills and accents. You can find beautiful items that have very clean lines that look great in a contemporary interior. For example, you could still put cushions on your chesterfield but they would not have any frills on them to distract from the shape and clean lines. You could use a coffee table that was made with very rich materials but which does not have a lot of ornamentation.

Materials

The kinds of materials that you use can also be used to create a very contemporary interior. Leather is often a great choice in a contemporary room even though it has been used for many years to cover furniture and accessories. Now it is being used for throw pillows and floor coverings as well as for coverings on sofas, chairs and love seats.

Taking the time to learn how to create a contemporary interior before you go shopping will be time well spent. Think about looking in magazines that show pictures of the kind of room that you want to create and make special notes about any products that you like a lot. Then, when it is time to go shopping you can seek these products out directly. Keep in mind, however, that for some high-end floor coverings you may end up needing to go through an interior designer or carpeting store since some designers will work only for members of the interior design trade.
