If you are having a baby anytime soon, your thoughts are straying to so many different things that it will be difficult to focus. The health of your baby, how you will deal with the lack of sleep, or the issue of creating space and a place in your home all run through your mind. One thing is for certain; your child will need a place to sleep and an area to store the many clothes, toys, and accessories that come with having a new baby.
Many people support the thought of room sharing with a new baby, so a new nursery is not an issue for the new parents. The nursery can be created after the baby is brought home. An added benefit to putting together a room after you have your baby is that you have a better idea as to the baby’s personality. You may have liked blue and green for your baby before, but now favor brown and blue. Styles, décor, and colors also change as you are spend more time with children. You can pick up style influences in baby stores or even in the park next door, so waiting to decorate can mean the difference between having a nursery you love and one that you can’t wait to change.
A great way to pick paint colors is to choose an accent color from crib bedding. This can range from super sleek and stylish stripes and bold patterns such as leopard. The choices are endless. Choose a small accent color and paint one of the larger walls in the room that color. The other walls should remain neutral. This combination will create an eye-catching room without having an overabundance of color that you will tire of after. The norm is to stick to pink or blue when painting a nursery, but choosing a bold color paired with a neutral will ensure you do not tire of the room as quickly.
If you plan on adding decals or wall art, try to stick to phrases and minimize the use of trucks, dolls, or bears. You want to create a room that will last beyond your baby’s first year, and having these items on the wall will date the room. There are many places that you can purchase wall art that has a cute phrase such as “Sleep Tight”.
The floor should be a place for exploration as your baby grows. Avoid cold hardwood by placing a big area rug beside the crib. A fluffy rug such as shag will be a cushy place for the baby to fall as they learn to walk, and a cuddly place to even change a diaper in a pinch. And there are heaps of cute nursery rugs for those that really need some baby motifs.
The nursery is a place that both yourself and your child will spend a lot of time. Focus on longevity rather than the traditional form of decor and you will have a room you and your child will enjoy for years to come.
