Metal Decor for a Sleek Contemporary Look

August 27, 2011 by Dan

If you prefer a sleek, modern and contemporary look for your home, metal decor is simply a natural. Although metal accent pieces and art can work well with almost any style of decorating, they seem to be particularly complimentary to modern decorating schemes. Through the proper use of metal art and decor, you’ll be able to create the perfect look within your home, both inside and out. Here are just a few of the many ways that metal decor can be used to accentuate a contemporary decorating theme.

Combining Form and Function

Contemporary decorating themes often have a strong focus on clean lines and simple decor. Choosing decorative pieces that also provide a functional benefit can be a great way to simplify the look of a room. For example, decorative metal wall wine racks are definitely functional, but can also double as a piece of wall art. You can achieve the same kind of effect by choosing decoratively designed shelves, planters, tables, coat racks, and other pieces that can do double-duty within your home. Because they are decorative as well as functional, they can often lessen the need to incorporate additional art pieces within a room.

Beautiful and yet functional pieces can work well within almost any room. In the kitchen and dining room, metal shelves, hooks, wine racks and even tables and chairs can work nicely. In the living room or family room, try adding a decorative metal shelf, candle sconce, planter or lighting fixture. In the bedroom, a metal headboard can add a very contemporary look.

Decorating with Art

Metal is also the perfect choice if you are looking for purely decorative contemporary pieces. You’ll find that contemporary metal art is available in almost any size, shape, color or design. When choosing art pieces for your home, you should focus on what appeals to you the most. Although it can be tempting to try to recreate a popular designer look within your home, you’ll be probably be happiest if you stick with pieces that you truly love. After all, choosing and displaying art is one of the most personal forms of home decorating.

When decorating a contemporary room, sleek pieces of metal abstract art can often work quite nicely. These pieces can be used to give a room plenty of design and visual appeal, while also providing a nice conversation starter. If you have an especially large wall, create a strong focal point by hanging a single oversized piece of metal wall art. You can also add a lot of visual interest to a room by tucking smaller pieces of art into corners and other small spaces.

Smaller art pieces can also be combined in order to create the visual impact of a much larger piece. For example, you could hang several complementary art pieces close together on a wall, simulating the overall appearance of a single large piece of art. This can be a great way to create a lot of visual impact even if you don’t have an oversized piece of art available to you.
