Sleek Decorating with Black and White

August 23, 2011 by Dan

If you’d like to add a sleek and contemporary look to your home, black and white decorating accents can often be the perfect choice. Regardless of your overall decorating style or color scheme, it can be easy to incorporate the basic shades into almost any room. There are a variety of different ways that black and white can be used as part of a decorating theme. In some cases, you might want to use black and white as accent shades, since they can provide a crisp visual contrast against almost any other color. Basic black or stark white can also be used as a neutral backdrop, providing you with the opportunity to highlight and accentuate any other shade as an accent. Here are just a few of the many beautifully sleek decorating effects you can achieve using simple black and white shades.

Black and White Accent Pieces

Black and white accent pieces can provide you with an especially easy and versatile way to decorate your home. Regardless of the overall room color scheme, you’ll find it easy to use black and white accent pieces. Depending on your preferences, you can use black and white to create vivid contrasts or a subtler look. For example, black metal wall decorations can really pop when displayed against a white or light colored wall. But, the same black metal decorations will look more subdued when displayed against a brick red, gold or other deep colored surface.

White decor can also be used to create a crisp, clean and cheerful look within a room. When combined with lighter shades, the look is fresh, modern and highly appealing. However, white can also be used to create interesting and beautiful contrasts against darker colors. For example, white painted wood trim can be especially appealing when it is contrasted against deep colored walls. You can also create a similar effect by displaying a piece of predominantly white art against a dark wall.

Black and White Outdoors

When decorating your home, it’s important not to forget your exterior living spaces. Black and white can be used with equal success outdoors, providing you with a way to create a lot of visual appeal. If you’d like to create a strong visual focal point on your deck or patio, try adding a piece of black or white outdoor wall art. Because these shades blend so easily with other colors, you’ll find that you can add a lot of style without worrying about matching colors. Try displaying a collection of potted plants or flowers in bright white pots, or accentuating the look of your potted plants by placing a decorative black wall grille behind them.

Retro Looks

Black and white are also great shades to use if you’d like to add a fun and funky retro look to one or more rooms of your home. Whether you prefer fun geometric wall art or the classic look of a black and white tile floor, these shades can make it easy to add the perfect retro touch. The popular retro look can be easily incorporated into both contemporary and more traditional decorating styles.
