Transform Your Yard for Easy Entertaining

July 31, 2011 by Dan

If your home has a nice yard surrounding it, chances are you enjoy at least occasionally entertaining friends and family members outside. There just seems to be something especially relaxing and enjoyable about dining, socializing and having fun outdoors, surrounded by nature. Although you can essentially entertain outside even if you only have the basic amenities, a little planning and decorating can make it an even more enjoyable activity. If you’d like to transform your average patio, deck or yard into the perfect spot for entertaining outdoors, here are a few suggestions to try:

Assess Your Outdoor Living Space

Before you start to plan and decorate your patio, deck or yard, it can be well worth your time and effort to first thoroughly examine and assess your outdoor environment. After all, if you really want to create an outdoor showplace, you’ll want to take care to design your exterior living space in a way that complements the style, architectural features and overall look of your home. The amount of outdoor space you actually have available to use is also an important factor to take into consideration. You should also give some thought as to your preferred entertaining style, as well as what kind of outdoor features and decor you might already have.

Create a Beautiful and Yet Functional Area

It goes without saying that in order to entertain successfully outdoors, you’ll need to make your yard, patio or deck functional. For example, if you enjoy cooking outdoors, a quality grill or outdoor stove is quite important. However, once you’ve taken care of your functional needs, it’s time to turn your attention to making the area beautiful as well as useful. Using artistic touches and decorative features is a great way to transform a plain outdoor environment into something really special. For example, a few outdoor metal wall sculptures could be just what you need to liven up your patio or deck area. A water feature can also add a lot of enjoyment to the time you spend outdoors, such as a small waterfall, pond or fountain. Functional and yet decorative yard accessories such as a birdbath or a sundial can also add a nice touch.

Add a Touch of Fun

Undoubtedly your style of decorating will naturally reflect your entertainment style. If you have a preference for grilling casual dinners outdoors, a picnic or patio table and a grill might be the main items you will need. However, if your preferences lean towards more formal affairs, then your outdoor dining and cooking areas should reflect that preference. But regardless of your overall style, you should make sure to add at least a few touches of fun to your outside decor. For example, welcome signs metal art decor can add a very personalized and welcoming touch to your patio area. A playful piece of sculpture or a fun piece of outdoor art can both be used to liven up your patio, deck or yard. Stepping stones in fun shapes or interesting garden markers in the flower beds surrounding the patio can also add a nice touch.
