Using Art to Create an Impressive Focal Point

September 24, 2011 by Dan

There are an almost endless number of ways to use art when decorating a home. However, it’s hard to argue with the fact that using art pieces to create eye-catching focal points is one of the ways to get the most visual impact from your art. Most professional designers agree that creating a focal point in a room is a great way to add style, depth and visual interest. In fact, sometimes a focal point can set the entire mood or decorating theme for a room. If you’d like to use art to create one or more focal points in your own home, here are some decorating tips to use as inspiration.

Think Big

When creating a striking focal point, big is often better than small. Although you certainly don’t want to completely overpower or overshadow a room with a large focal point, an appropriately large sized piece can really create a lot of focus and visual excitement. For example, if you have a large expanse of wall in your family or living room, use it as a backdrop for an eye-catching piece of large abstract wall art. By doing so, you’ll instantly transform a boring wall into an area that will grab the attention of everyone who enters the room.

Many people immediately think of interior decorating techniques when they hear the words “focal point.” However, it’s important to remember that the exterior of your home could also benefit from a focal point. For example, a beautifully ornate wrought iron wall grille could provide your patio or deck with just the touch of style it needs. Or, create visual excitement in your yard by using a strategically positioned piece of large metal or wood yard art.

Consider All Forms of Art

Unfortunately, it’s often common for homeowners to get “stuck in a rut” when choosing art pieces for the home. Instead of choosing all the same kind of art, try mixing it up a bit by choosing art pieces in a variety of different mediums. For example, if you currently have a room that is decorated predominantly with framed prints or canvas paintings, why not try adding a piece of wood wall art to spice things up a bit? Professional designers often use artistic groupings that consist of a variety of different art forms to add character and style to a room. You can easily achieve the same effect by simply mixing and matching different kinds of art pieces.

By combining several different smaller art pieces, you can create a larger display that can have the same amount of visual impact as a much larger piece of art. This can be an easy way of creating an impressive focal point within a room, even if you don’t own any large art pieces. Combining several art pieces to create a single focal point can also provide you with a lot of decorating versatility. For example, if you grow tired of a particular piece of art, you can simply swap out one piece of the collection for another, thus creating a fresh new look.
