What Would Leonardo DaVinci’s Home Look Like Today?

November 29, 2012 by Dan

When it comes to style and design Leonardo DaVinci must be up there with the most famous characters in history. Not only was he a fantastic artist who is responsible for some of the world’s most iconic images, but was also an incredible engineer, scientist and inventor who was well ahead of his time.

Leonardo DaVinci then would no doubt have been great at interior design, and it’s safe to assume he’d have had a rather spectacular looking home filled with exciting trinkets and gadgets. If he were alive today then, what might his interior design look like? And how can we channel some of that creativity and knowledge into our own homes and layouts. Here we will look at how you can create a Leonardo-inspired look for your home today.

Technology :  When you think of Leonardo DaVinci’s home you probably think of it as being old fashioned and not filled with high tech gadgets – after all the guy was alive during the Renaissance and long before Steve Jobs announced the iPad.

That said though, DaVinci would no doubt have a very high tech home, because he was always ahead of his time. If you want to look like an eccentric genius/homo universalis, then you should make sure that you have all the latest gizmos and that your whole home is a tech lover’s dream. That means widescreen TVs and it means super computers.

At the same time though if you want your home to look like DaVinci’s then you should make sure that your tech serves a purpose and has a scientific slant. Things like telescopes and plasma globes are not just great looking and lots of fun to play with, but they also act as a homage to science in your home.

The ‘Studious’ Look :  First and foremost DaVinci was a scholar, and one who enjoyed reading and collecting as much information as possible. No doubt he’ll have had a sprawling library filled with notes, and you can accomplish the same kind of thing in your home too. If you want your home to look like a ‘tribute to knowledge’ then you should consider books as part of your décor and look into displaying them in a central way. Meanwhile other elements like sketch pads, globes, maps on the walls and trinkets from your travels can all help to create that impression that you have a thirst and a reverence for knowledge.

Neo Classic :  While DaVinci wouldn’t have an old fashioned home, to create that look you can still allude to the time period he lived in and by merging the old with the new you can create a truly unique and timeless look. Offsetting time periods is a great look and it will be as though you’ve chosen all the best elements from different time periods. For instance then using polished wooden floors and large mahogany desks is a great way to make your property look classical and make it less easy to date, as is using works of art and paintings – and of course if you really want that DaVinci feel you could always look for a copy of something actually painted by DaVinci.
